Why the universal answer fails

A filter does not age by calendar alone. It loads as the system moves air and particles reach the media. Two identical filters installed on the same day can look different weeks later because the homes, weather and runtimes differ. EPA notes that manufacturers commonly recommend replacement every 60 to 90 days, but it also directs consumers to follow manufacturer recommendations and consider changing a heavily soiled filter sooner.
